Action Alert: Informed Consent Needs Governor's Signature
As many of you know, Colorado HB10-1201 recently passed out of the state legislature with more than a 2/3 majority! The last step is to ensure Governor Ritter does not veto the proposal, forcing the legislature to repeat the process over again.
HB 1201 simply mandates an officer honor the fourth amendment when requesting
to search a person, their belongings or a vehicle by informing that person he
or she has a right to refuse. Remember, the request to search is made because
there is no legal basis or probable cause to conduct a legal search. This bill
is meant to promote good law enforcement while preventing the incentive for bad
actors to engage in any form of ineffective racial profiling or abuse of
discretion.
Action #1: Please call Governor Ritter and/or members of his staff at 303
866-2471 and ask that HB 1201 is signed into law.
Action #2: Please print the attached letter, insert your name in the heading, sign your name and fax it to Governor Ritter.
For action #1 call you could say:
Governor Ritter, my name is ____________ and I represent ____________. I'm contacting you concerning HB 1201. I ask that you honor the legislative process and the negotiations between law enforcement and representatives of the community by supporting HB 1201. Thank you for your time.
