A Fair Tax
The Colorado Progressive Colaition's Campaign for Economic Justice is helping to organize a revolution in tax policy. Quiet for too long, many of us have been without voice when it comes to ensuring everyone pays their fair share. Now, as tax cuts for the country's top earners continue to increase, we are rising up to fight for a tax system to decrease the wealth gap that is draining our families' dwindling resources only to add to the treasure trove the wealthiest control.
The Colorado Progressive Coalition is a member of the Tax Fairness Organizing Collaborative, a project of United for a Fair Economy. Our campaign is rooted by two core beliefs. The first of these beliefs is that a fair tax system is one that is progressive, transparent and generates enough revenue to fund quality public services such as schools, health care, and infrastructure that enable all people to thrive. The second belief is that comprehensive participation of people at the grassroots level is integral to achieving long-term political change.
· The tax system in Colorado is upside-down. When considering all taxes combined, the lowest income earners are paying 9% of their income to taxes while the richest 1% is only paying 4%. There are many contributing factors to this upside down distribution of responsiblity. Our state income tax rate is flat. Everyone in the state of Colorado pays the same rate. It doesn't matter if you are making $40,000 a year or $400,000.Flat tax fails to satisfy the principles of fair, responsive, stable and efficient tax policy essential to the proper function of a revenue system.
