Economic Justice
The Campaign for Economic Justice is Colorado Progressive Coalition's public policy, advocacy and grassroots organizing campaign to advance economic justice, equal opportunity, tax and budget fairness, workers' rights and corporate accountability. The Campaign fights against systemic demographic inequities that have allowed corporate and high-wealth interests to grow in prosperity and influence while low-income and people of color see their homes and livelihoods stolen.
Committed to developing sustainable and progressive fiscal policies that address the growing economic divide between the richest 5% and the rest of us, the Campaign fights to reign in the fiscal policies that have contributed to an economy that only provides opportunity for a privileged few. In doing so, we are building a fiscal future that works for everyone – not just the wealthy or well-connected.
As one of the wealthiest and most highly educated states in the nation, Colorado's public structures and services should reflect its prosperity. Currently, we are building a strong coalition of community members to support a fair tax system in Colorado to ensure that the tax responsibility is more equitably distributed. The campaign, and our members, are committed to addressing the revenue crisis in our state by raising sufficient revenues needed to support a quality public school system from preschool to college and a health care system that has sufficient resources to care for all individuals.
The Campaign has fought to protect hardworking Coloradans from predatory lending practices for years, winning significant payday lending industry reforms that protect families from the industries' debt-cycle trap. Last year, the payday lending industry attempted to roll back that crucial lending reform legislation, and we fought and beat them. Though the industry pulled out all stops, spending more than $200,000 on lobbying to garner support from Republicans and a handful of Democrats, we we brought community voice to the dome to ensure the rollback did not succeed.
We are also fighting against the Wall Street wrecking ball and taking on the abuses of the “big” banks like Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, and Bank of America. By building support from our state policy makers to help put an end to the foreclosure crisis we are working to win the assurance that Colorado families don’t lose their most precious source of wealth, their homes.
