Southern Colorado Regional Program
CPC believes Colorado's progressive movement must be truly statewide, and that change doesn't only happen in the more progressive Denver and Boulder areas. Since the 2004 election, CPC has had a strong Southern Colorado presence. We established a permanent office in Pueblo in 2005 and hired locally-rooted staff. Now, we continue local community organizing and have Pueblo participation on our Board of Directors.
Since 2004 when we opened our Pueblo office, CPC has addressed local environmental and racial justice issues, including water contamination and neighborhood flooding. We are working to stop hundreds of thousands of gallons of raw sewage being dumped by Colorado Springs Utilities into the Fountain Creek, which ends up in a low-income, predominantly Latino neighborhood of Pueblo. We also work to ensure communities are engaged in the political process through voting, community forums, and community education.
In 2007, we celebrated a major victory with the closing of local polluter L.B. Foster, who was emiting toxics into nearby neighborhood Peppersauce Bottoms. We connect our statewide policy and electoral work to local issues in Southern Colorado, and in 2006, we piloted a local Leadership Academy that trained 15 new grassroots leaders who are now leading their own community improvement projects.
We are excited to welcome Theresa Trujillo as our new Southern Colorado Director! Theresa joined CPC in October, 2008 and leads our organizational development and program work across the region. You can contact Theresa at (719) 406-3716 or theresa@progressivecoalition.org.
